Tacos, Nachos, and the Last Football Sunday

Sunday marks the biggest game of the season; the LAST game of the season; and therefore a sad day in our household.

Are we crazy football fans who sport foam fingers and jerseys while heckling the opposing quarterback, who cry if our home team loses, who wear beer-dispensing helmets so as not to miss a moment? No. Are we even die-hard fans of any one team? Not really. It’s always nice to see the local teams do well, but it doesn’t make too much difference who plays, really. So, what does that make us? Lazy.

To us, football season is a perfect excuse to sit together and do nothing. We curl up on the couch in our pajamas and, sure, we watch the game, but we also chat, read, or doze off. For some reason, we just feel better doing nothing under the guise of “watching football.” And with Super Bowl Sunday looming, we’ll soon need a new guise.

Another thing Super Bowl Sunday means, and I can totally get on board with this one, is eating ridiculous amounts of food and drinking ridiculous amounts of beer all day without feeling one bit bad about it. Last year, our food theme was quintessential party food, with classics like 7-layer dip, guacamole, chili con queso, chicken wings…you get the picture. This year, we’ve decided on a meat theme (which may be the finest theme there is). That means barbecued ribs, sliders, three kinds of tacos, chicken nachos and, of course, chicken wings, because really, a Super Bowl party without wings is a sad party indeed. Monday sounds like a good time to start a detox, doesn’t it?

Mystery meat and cheese sauce is bound to shave some time off your life, right?
So I couldn’t just make nachos with faux cheese or grab a six-pack of tacos from our good friend Jack. Instead I made a taco bar menu three kinds of meat and super-sized gourmet chicken nachos, with no liquid cheese in sight. Hopefully my heart gives me some reprieve for health-ing up the offerings a bit. And maybe it could ignore all the other stuff I’m doing wrong that day.

I hope you enjoy your last football Sunday. We’re planning to go out with a (meaty) bang…

Cheers!

  5. I am so pleased to see you be honest about your love for football Sunday. :) Hubby and I ARE fans of the game and have favorite teams, both of which will not make an appearance on Sunday. Because of that, and the fact that the teams that are appearing have done so too many times for us to care, it'll be about the food. I could easily make it about THIS food, that's for sure. It looks amazing.
